Great Outdoors

Now that temperatures are cooling (a little), we're venturing out a little more. This was a nice little hike along the Bill Spring Trail in the Sandia Mountains of the Cibola National Forest. Superboy was our water mule. We had to stop for a water break every two minutes or so, but what a trooper!

I've just learned that the Bill Spring trailhead is in an area that was closed until Sept. 4 due to an abundance of acorns and bear activity. Yikes! We didn't see any bears, but we did smell some very animal-y smells, and we did notice the acorns. A few months ago, a 5 year-old boy was attacked by what his family believes was a mountain lion on the popular Balsam Glade Nature Trail near the Sandia Crest. As I remember it, the poor little guy was up ahead on the trail from his folks, and the animal grabbed him by the head and tried to drag him away. His Dad jumped on the animal, which then let the boy go and ran off. Double Yikes. We kept both kids very, very close.

One day, Daddy felt brave and took both animals on a hike in the Petroglyph National Monument. They wore him out; good thing we think they're cute.

Hittin' the Sauce

Oh, it was just blueberry applesauce. Still, I can't help but wonder whether it could have fermented just the teensy-weensiest bit?

Superboyisms

Superboy is known in our household for not being fazed when unable to find just the right word to express himself. Usually, he just makes something up (you may recall my chin once being compared to scrambled eggs) and continues right along. While sorting through some papers, I came across a few examples I'd jotted down on an envelope and thought I'd share them with you-all. I really should try to write down more of them!

"This plane has trouble landing; it just bangs on its brainging bang-bum!"

(in exasperated tone) "Oh, Bumbles!"

"Daddy's voice is like a crumpling cookie."

Poopy

Yes, yes, you read it right. I know, it's not a tasteful subject, but, well, I'm afraid I'm not known for being a tasteful gal. Anyways...

Supergirl comes up and holds something out to me in the kitchen as I am cooking dinner tonight. Ack! Fresh cat poop! All squished between her fat little fingers. Where, oh where did it come from? Well, we do have cats, so in theory it could have come from anywhere, which concerns me somewhat. Is there more out there, lurking, just waiting to be picked up and played with? But I digress. And why put down this little mishap for posterity, anyway? Well, someday, when she's 15 and has deemed me the worst mom ever, I will indignantly retort, "I am not! And I have proof!" And I will dredge up this little nugget (*ahem*) from the family archives.

For she holds out the poop to me, and what do I do? I snatch it away from her with my bare hands. I don't really know what I was thinking, but if that isn't maternal devotion, what is?

Greenery

We found some!!!!!!!!!
Okay, in all fairness, we already knew where it was and have occasionally ventured out of our usual xeriscapery (not a word, you say?) to wallow in it before. This was a beautiful day, full of crackers, quackers and shady exploration. I think the grass was even damp.

Linguine...

...how I love thee, let me count the ways:
one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, nineteen, twenty, twenty-one...

Superboy's Big Day

Would you believe that I can count on one hand the number of times Superboy has been in the care of someone other than A. or myself, and that all of those times he was with grandparents? This was a tough day for me, but so exciting for the Boy!

This one was taken moments after greeting his teacher. As you can see, he wasted no time jumping right in. Can you spot him?

Superboy and Firefighter Daddy

Just so dern heart cockle-warming to me, I had to post it.

Anticipation

Are they ready yet?

Are they ready YET?????? Oh, WHEN oh WHEN will they be READY?
