Weird Gardening
We needed bean sprouts for a recipe one week, and the ones in our market looked so nasty, Superboy and I decided to grow our own for the first time, ever. Here's how they turned out: all of these from a couple of tablespoons of mung beans I happened to have in my pantry (doesn't everyone?) Pretty amazing, huh?
We followed the instructions in my trusty old Laurel's Kitchen, which recently broke at the binding into three pieces, alas. For now, you can find them here.
Many months ago, I bought some sunchokes at the market for the very first time. As I had no real plan for them, they languished for months in my refrigerator until I was sure it wasn't a good idea to go ahead and eat them. So, I placed them on the counter to remind me to suggest to Superboy that we plant them in the yard, just to see what happens. And there they languished for a couple more weeks, and, finally, began to sprout. By that spurred to action, I asked Superboy to take them outside so we could plant them later that very afternoon! And there they languished on the patio table for several more days, where they were alternately irradiated by the southwestern desert sun and drowned by the southwestern autumn rains. Although they were looking more than a bit unlikely to grow after that, we finally planted them. We'll let you know if anything happens!
Here is Superboy's own original landscaping. I think I like it!

Birthday
Here's your opportunity to relive nearly the entire breathtakingly exciting day. Not many gift-opening shots here...dear sweet Superboy elected to wait until Daddy was home to open all but one of that mountain of gifts from generous friends and family, despite the fact that they were virtually taunting him from the kitchen table throughout the day. I was so proud of him! But by the time dinner and cake were done, Supergirl was jest plain tuckered out, and the dramatic expression of her fatigue greatly impeded photographing of the gift opening bonanza.
"Oh what a beautiful moooorning! Oh what a beautiful day!"
Me so happy!
Hard at work and long-ribboned balloon:
The one gift he opened in the morning. He had this thing put together, completely unassisted, in about 10 minutes; I couldn't believe it. Budding engineer?
Banana pancakes:
Party in the park: cupcakes!

1st piƱata!
Me, too?

Much easier to get in the power swing with the blindfold off.
Collecting the spoils:
Custom cake: pink and brown frosting with sprinkles.

"Oh what a beautiful moooorning! Oh what a beautiful day!"

Stylin'
Superboy has taken to wearing a second (clean, thank goodness) pair of underwear over his clothes as part of his various superhero attire. When I questioned him about it, explaining that most people wear their underwear under their clothing ("That's why they call it underwear," I said, cleverly), he replied, "But Mom, that's part of my style."
Supergirl looks pretty snazzy, too, dontcha think?

Celebration in the Park
Check it out! It's Cowboy Superboy!
Woo hoo!
Shootin' the breeze with the horsie guy?
Gimme 5!
Check it out! It's Firefighter Superboy!
"Driving" the truck. Seriously, these guys were so great to us. Three cheers for the Fire Dept.! What would we do without them?
Check it out! It's Superstar Superboy! At the end of the program, all the kids went up to sing a song called "Believe in Yourself," which I hear they had been practicing at school for some time. At first, Superboy was on the ground in front of the stage, and there were technical difficulties with the soundtrack. He kept turning his back to the audience to face the stage, and when he was facing forward, he looked about to burst into tears. Finally, I beckoned him off to the side, thinking perhaps he was overwhelmed by the experience. Ha! Turns out he was upset because they weren't doing the song they had prepared, and because he was in front of the stage, and not on it. So I lifted him up on the stage, suggesting they might still resolve the difficulties and do the song (they did). As you can see, he was far from overwhelmed by the experience. I think we may have a showman on our hands, here.

The Big Parade
Last Friday was a BIG day for Superboy. His preschool held its 40th Anniversary Celebration, in which students past and present took part. There was a parade, headed by a police escort and tailed by the Fire Dept., from the preschool to the park where the main celebration took place. Getting ready to start:
The view in front of us:
Superboy, attention caught by festivities awaiting in the park:
Supergirl doing her part. Sure wish I'd been using a super-duper state-of-the-art camera, and not my cell phone. You can just barely see her reflection in the balloon; how neat would that have looked if done right?
